On every February 14 in
the United States and in other places around the word there is a special day
that will never be forgotten. This holiday is called valentine’s day. What is Valentine’s
Day? Valentine’s Day is a day to show your appreciation for others. It is a day
to show that you are happy to have someone in your life. And it is a way to
show love for your family and friends.
Candy flowers and gifts
are exchanged between loved ones in the name of saint valentine. “Approximately
150 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine’s
Day the second most popular card- sending holiday after Christmas.”
(www.history.com) this shows how valentine has become a really big part of our
lives. But how did this holiday come to be? Well one legend is “When Emperor
Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives
and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the
injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for
young lovers in secret.”(www.History.com) this shows that Valentine’s Day is a
day that helps celebrate love. Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St.
Valentine’s Day. However, that the day became definitively involved with love.
And during the Mid Ages, it was believed in
France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds’ mating season,
which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance.
In addition to the U.S. Valentine’s Day also began to be celebrated in other
places like Mexico and Canada. It was known that they would exchange a small
gift in order to thank each other for being a part of each other’s life and it
was a way to give thanks for being by each other’s side. Now days we see this
act everywhere we go. For example in school we see friends exchanging gifts
with other friends and it is not unusual that we see many smiles on this day. All
thanks to St. Valentine. In conclusion Valentine’s Day is a day of love and
compassion. And is a really nice day to spend with your friends and family.
